I am 85 years old, now five months into my 86th orbit of the sun. I cannot complain about my life. I had wonderful parents, grew up with good people, got a college education and had gainful employment during my working years. I have a good wife (married 61 years) and we were blessed with four biological children and several foster children who, after all these years, are still our pride and joy.
Personally, we are very well off. We have enough to live on and enjoy a few recreational favors in spite of the fact that we might be classed as “lower middle class”. We try to use our money wisely so that we will have enough to share some of it with those who are not as well off as we. I have volunteered several hundred hours (possibly over 5,000) in the last 15 years to help make this a better community.
So what’s bugging me? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? What right have I to be critical? It is hard to believe that this country, which has treated me and my family so well, is going downhill like a runaway freight train. We try to train our children to use money wisely, yet this country, overall, uses money like the proverbial drunken sailor. This country, this citizenry, this culture, this society (supposedly the most religious country in the world) is extremely dysfunctional in the way it spends its money.
The common wisdom is that we spend the most money for the things that are the most valuable to us. So what are we spending our money on?
- ENTERTAINMENT. We pay professional athletes millions of dollars for showing us their skills for a few minutes each year. We pay huge salaries to TV and Movie personalities for a few minutes on the screen. College athletes get “scholarships” and under-the-table goodies (other students get huge debts). The Spirit Mountain Casino is the number one tourist attraction in the state of Oregon.
- ELECTIONS. In every recent election, the candidates have (nationally) spent billions of dollars in their efforts to get elected. This money does not do anyone, except the candidate (and the money interests s/he is serving) any good at all. The money spent on elections is a complete waste and there are a hundred places in every community where that money would be of much more benefit to the population as a whole.
- ILLEGAL DRUGS. It is estimated that the people in the United States spend $140 to $150 billion dollars each year on illegal drugs. It is probably the largest illegal drug market in the world. The damage is inestimable.
I could probably list several more reckless expenditures, but these three illustrate the picture. And, WHAT IS SUFFERING?: EDUCATION, from kindergarten through graduate school. HEALTH CARE, primarily for the people uncovered by insurance or who are under-insured. POLICE and FIRE departments, whose budgets are being trimmed substantially. PARKS and LIBRARIES, who are always the first to suffer budget cuts. INFRASTRUCTURE also suffers, it is easy to delay or neglect the necessary items.
So Entertainment, Elections, and Illegal Drugs are more important to the citizens of the United States than Good Education, Health Care, Police and Fire Departments, Parks and Libraries, and Infrastructure. It is only a matter of time before the reality hits us all on the blind side and the country will find itself in a REAL depression. Is hitting bottom the only thing that will wake us up? Are we standing here enjoying the sunset while the bank is eroding out from under us?
